The Continuous Journey

It was an exciting day running the 5th Program Keusahawanan (PK)* University as it was the first skills set session the PPR participants were receiving.

The morning kickstarted with Mr Rizal Rashid, Neuronworks Master Trainer, boosting the confidence and communication skills of the participants. According to a participant, what made his session unique was the fact he provided frameworks and tools that participants could easily understand and relate to.

There were two skill set classes that were conducted simultaneously in the afternoon by Urutgo and Farzana Habib. The classes focused on teaching the PPR women participants the techniques of massaging and applying make-up respectively.

‘Program Dinamika Wanita’ with PPR Sri Pantai

With the cases of Brett Kavanaugh and Larry Nassar going on, the discussion on women empowerment and gender equality are still considered as controversial topics. Women around the world are affected by pressing social challenges ranging from violence against women to gender discrimination. Gender equality is a fundamental human right that is needed to create a sustainable world for the future generation.

Unfortunately, according to The United Nations report, 1 in 5 women and girls between the ages of 15-49 have reported experiencing physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner within a 12-month period and 49 countries currently have no laws protecting women from domestic violence. In line with the Sustainable Goal 5 to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, Taylor’s Community organised the ‘Program Dinamika Wanita’ for 51 women from the PPR Sri Pantai Community last Saturday.

“KeluargaKu InspirasiKu” with PPR Sri Pantai

It is the right of every individual to be equipped with the support, skills and tools to live a life they aspire. Families can play a crucial role in building an environment to fill these needs. In Taylor’s Community, we believe in empowering families among the underserved communities as we could curb social issues from happening that are caused by the lack of family support.

The programme “KeluargaKu InspirasiKu” happened on the 29th of October 2018 with various families from PPR Sri Pantai. The programme was designed for families to understand the importance of family support, creating a family belief system and ways to improve family communication. A total of 5 families and 2 children from each family were invited to attend the programme.

The programme promoted empathy by organising activities that allowed individuals to understand their respective roles in their families. One of the families stated that their understanding of an individual role’s in a family changed at the end of the programme. Their original perspective of an individual role’s in a family was assigned based on their gender, now they understand that every individual plays an equally important role in supporting a family.

Malaysia Day Celebration at PPR Sri Pantai

Malaysia is well-known for a country where one can experience a multitude of culture, races, food and festivals celebrations. There were challenges and obstacles, but we surged forward with a strong sense of unity all these years since we agreed to the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on Sept 16 in 1963. This year, Taylor’s Community took the initiative to celebrate Malaysia Day with the PPR Sri Pantai community to foster the Malaysian spirit and remind our people on the sacrifices of our forefathers in achieving the independence we enjoy today.

Some 40 adults and 37 children attended the event which took place on 15th September 2018 at the community that is specially designed to develop the unity between multiracial communities in Sri Pantai and to encourage the emotional wellbeing with added joy and fun. Bringing more enjoyment to this celebration, we created children version “Kami Anak Malaysia” program for the kids to gain the same amount of benefit from this event.

Health Intervention by TUSOM at SOLS

You come back home tired after a long day of slaving away and before having dinner, you open your favorite social media app. You make a promise of only 5 minutes on this app, despite knowing that you are about to spend an hour on it. Amid the scarce posts by your friends, you are bombarded by advertisements from KFC and McDonalds showcasing their new mouthwatering dishes and models who seem like their last meal was a salad and they must have eaten that about a year ago. Depressed, you may try to seek solace with the newspaper only to shown news of suicide, accidents and that Malaysia has once again topped Asia’s Obesity ranking. Unbeknownst to us, all of these has been setting us down an unhealthy path, one that appears to have no bright light at the end of the tunnel. We can wait for miraculous savior come and safe us from the destruction ahead but we would end up waiting forever. The change we need must come from ourselves to stop us from continuing down this. The best weapon to combat this and one that we must holster is knowledge about the best ways to maintain a healthy life. The Taylor’s School of Medicine was locked and loaded to dispense these literal life-saving knowledge to the children at SOLS.
