Art Brings Colour and Therapy to the Lives of Refugee Students in Rainbow of Love

“Art is all about expressing emotion”

On the walls of their school, they painted dreams of peace, their brushstrokes and illustrations expressions of emotions they would otherwise not be able to voice.

To help them cope with the present and overcome the trauma they have been through, Taylor’s Community initiated a mural painting project on 11th March 2019 for the Rohingya refugees studying in Rainbow of Love (Pelangi Kasih) school.

Hanif Mahpa, a teacher in the school says the project thought the students to be patient while boosting up their confidence level. “Over some small conversations with the students who was painting the wall, they have mentioned that they gained new experience and proud that they hand-painted a part of their school’s wall. The students are so happy that they can express themselves this way. They have enjoyed painting a lot,” he shared.

Urban Farming Together with Lembah Pantai Kids and YB Fahmi Fadzil

Growing up and living with technology, our children today hardly got the chance to surround themselves with nature. This does not only disconnect them from mother earth, but also limits imagination and mental growth. The natural surroundings help in children’s learning and development, physical and mentally, thus it is extremely important for them to reconnect with floras and faunas.

With that, the ‘Kids 4 Kids’ (K4K) Civic Club of Lembah Pantai got their hands dirty while learning last Sunday. The children aged 7 to 12 of various PPR communities in that area gathered at Kebun-Kebun Kerinchi, for an urban farming activity along with Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai, YB Fahmi Fadzil. Kebun-Kebun Kerinchi is the second project of Ng Seksan, a landscape architect who’s the mastermind behind lush ‘Sekeping’ nature retreats around Malaysia. Under a meaningful theme: Nature and Cleanliness, 37 children from K4K Civic Club have participated in this activity together with their parents at the farm located right opposite Pantai Eco Park.

Christmas Donation Drive 2018

Thomson S. Monson, an American religious leader once said, “Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is considered happiness because we see the joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values.” With this, the interns of Taylor’s Community decided to plan a Christmas Donation Drive with Pertubuhan Pusat Kebajikan Destiny, Klang to execute their passion project. This project encourages the staff and students of Taylor’s Education Group to donate any necessary items such as toys, stationeries, food, books and more to the refugee children.

This project was also aimed at enlightening the festival celebration amongst the refugee children aged between 2 to 6 years old. The outcome was overwhelming as we received many donated item from the staff, students as well as the friends of our team members. (more…)

Introducing Junior World

The idea of educating the right brain of the younger children started a program named Junior World and was held at Pertubuhan Pusat Kebajikan Destiny on the 1st of November 2018. Taylor’s Community organized a half-day program involving 4 volunteers and 38 children aged four to six years old. Art-based activities were carried out to encourage positive behaviour, these activities also allowed the children to polish their social skills, support their emotional growth in a fun and safe environment.

The children demonstrated excitement and were eager to begin the activity as soon as they saw the arrival of the volunteers. The first activity, ‘Who Are You’, was aimed to create awareness of self-identity through art. The children made themselves a name tag using various art materials. The second activity, ‘Tropical Fruits’, was carried out to encourage creativity and artistic attitude among children. The children teamed up to make tropical fruits using colourful clays with the guidance and supervision of the volunteers and teachers. It was a colourful outcome as both the activities used a variety of colours, the children were participative and the home was filled with sounds of laughter of not just the children, but also the volunteers.
