Community university (Comm U) is back, what does it mean? What does Comm U even mean? To give you a little background:
Taylor’s Education Group has always believed in the power of education and likewise for us, Taylor’s Community, the CSR department.
Our mantra is that, ‘to give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, to teach a man how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.’ With this, our community projects are always planned with sustainability in mind. Over the years, upon creating the Hourglass model that identifies community issues, our yearly calendar was created based on these needs and created programs that addresses these issues. The majority of our programs were executed on our very own Taylor’s Lakeside Campus because we wanted the community to benefit from the facilities. Programs and classes were run on a Saturday as the community could then have access to facilities like lecture theatres and computer labs. So, this is how Comm U came about. Last year’s national was truly momentous for Comm U as we had a total of 500 people on campus for our community program.
However, many of these programs came to a halt when Covid-19 hit Malaysia and Movement Control Order (MCO) was implemented. We has to quickly divert and run Hourglass again to find out what were their needs. From here, we were able create modules that helped the B40 entrepreneurs adapt to online selling as well as emotional well being modules to help them manage emotional stress.
Now that the worst is over, we are slowly transitioning back to our usual classes. Last Saturday, we ran 2 programs concurrently and impacted more than 50 B40 community lives through entrepreneurship empowerment. We are thankful to our partners PruKasih, Yayasan Generasi Gemilang and Maybank Islamic for making those programs come true. It was executed both online and on the ground. Moreover, after seeing benefits of online classes and not forgetting the human touch of physical classes, we’ll be sticking to blended learning for all our future programs.
We’re super excited for what’s coming up and how our classes can transform these communities. If you would like to partner us, just drop an email to may.wong@taylors.edu.my.
