<\/p>\nCould you imagine studying in a school with no furniture? Or using old and broken furniture that were thrown away? Unfortunately, this is the reality for countless underprivileged and marginalised communities in many parts of the Malaysia. From no access to electricity to the inability to receive basic education, many of the issues pervading communities around the country can be attributed to the absence of basic infrastructure and facilities.<\/p>\n
For the refugee communities, majority of the students have limited access to the basic facilities of life. Therefore, the school facilities can have a profound impact on both teacher and student outcomes and contribute greatly to improved learning environment.<\/p>\n

With that Taylor\u2019s Education Group recently partnered with Ayer Holdings Berhad, a property and plantation group on a furniture building project for the Chin Student Organisation (CSO) centre in Puchong. Organised and led by Ignition Lab, a creative learning centre that focuses on utilizing carpentry tools to encourage creative thinking and problem solving skills amongst children & youth, the project was initiated with an objective to instil learning through contribution where school fixtures and furniture will be built for the Chin Student Organisation (CSO) centre in Puchong.<\/p>\n

Some 30 volunteers from Taylor\u2019s University and Taylor\u2019s College joined by seven CSO students built furniture, consisting of a dining table, stools and a book shelf last Saturday at Foreston, Bukit Puchong, one of Ayer\u2019s flagship township projects. Building the furniture from scratch, the group of students and staff were assisted by trained staff from Ignition Lab by providing the participants with basic carpentry skills such as sawing, drilling and screwing.<\/p>\n

Karolnesa Lee, a participant from Taylor\u2019s University School of Education shared, \u201cwe learnt how to cut the wood and screw them into furniture. These are new skills that we have never experienced from home or classes. We also wished more lecturers and admin staff of Taylor\u2019s would volunteer together so that we can learn more from each other.\u201d Another participant, Norshahila Mohamad Razak a lecturer from Taylor\u2019s University School of Liberal Arts & Sciences also noted that the project has taught her skills that she never imagined she would have learnt from being a staff in Taylor\u2019s and treasured the experience of working alongside the students and the refugee kids themselves.<\/p>\n

Ignition Lab’s\u00a0<\/span>Chief Execution Officer, Alan Ng are extremely satisfied with the results by the participants. \u201cAt the beginning I thought the participants without wood working experience would find a bit of struggle to complete the furniture on time, but things turned out beyond my expectations. We are definitely looking forward to partnering with Taylor\u2019s Group CSR again as Ignition Lab also focus on education.
